Summary[]

It was a perfect summer day as Joshua Jones and Fairport chugged along on Delilah towards Sharon’s Cafe. “Hi Sharon you closing already?” “I’ve got this job as a waitress helping a friend of mine” “Have fun” laughed Josh. At the Wharf it was an important day for Wilton Cashmore. Mr and Mrs Biggott were coming for a meal. Mrs Karia to put the table on the terrace and insisted that the food be put out ready. Mousse Vol_au_vents, tarts pies and a huge trifle. Mrs Karia asked “Will you want me to wait at table” “No, thank you I’ve got trained staff coming. You take the day off. I’ve already told Spanner he needn’t come in”. Spanner was at Joe Laski’s Farm to help get in the hay with Ravi and Fiona. He directed operations and Ravi and Fiona lugged the bales down the field for Joe to load on his trailer. “Phew! That’s the last one” panted Ravi. “Is there any orange juice left?” “Plenty” said Spanner passing him a nearly empty bottle. Joe arrived in the tractor. “Hurry”, he shouted. “My bunion is twitching, a-storm is coming”. At the Wharf Josh said “Funny how quiet it is today. I wonder what Spanner and Wilton are up to today?”. There was a slight his ears, sniffing leaped over the deck to where Josh was standing and bolted into the cabin. “What’s the matter Fairport old pal?” said Josh. There was another rumble and the sky darkened. “Oh on! what about Laski’s hay?” said Josh. Wilton Cashmore heard the rumble of thunder too, and looked nervously at the terrace. Just then there was a knock at the door. “Sharon! what are you doing here?” “I’ve come to help Mr Cashmore. Who is it that’s coming?” “The Bigg-Biggotts” gulped Mr Cashmore. “Have you ever waited at the table before?” “No” said Sharon gaily. Back at the farm, Joe jumped down from the tractor. “We must work fash. Wet hay will make the cows sick. Can you manage?” “No problem” said Spanner. Fiona and Ravi exchanged glances. “He’s the limit” whispered Fiona. One after another they carried the bales over to Spanner and Joe and they loaded them on the trailer. Joe said “We’ve done it. Thank you very much” “I’ll drive the tractor” said Spanner. “Hokey-dokey” said Joe. “But you take care now”. Ravi said “We’ll, we’d better get home before we get wet”. Spanner started the engine the tractor and trailer lurched forward and Joe grabbed on to the bales of hay to steady himself. Ravi shouted “Spanner you’re heading for a ditch!” Spanner couldn’t hear a thing and drove straight into the ditch. Joe and the hay were hurled from the trailer. Fiona ran to him. “Mr Laski are you all right?” “I am very cross. What about my hay?” Toot-toot It was Joshua Jones steering Delilah out of the tunnel. Josh instantly took those rope in his mouth and leaped ashore. He ran to Ravi and he made the rope fast. Josh jumped off the boat and tied the stern line. “Listen everybody try to get the hay to the boat and we’ll load it on” The thunder continued to rumble and large drops of rain splashed noisily into the water. “Keep them coming” cried Josh. Suddenly there was a flash of lightning. “All aboard” shouted Josh. Josh loosened the ropes. “Oh no!, look” cried Mr Laski. “We left one bale behind”. Ravi jumped back onto the bank. The sky lit up in a glare of white light followed by an enormous clap of thunder. “Ravi!” cried Fiona. “I’ll take cover” shouted Ravi. Ravi tried to drag the bale of hay across the towpath to the boat. The rain lashed his face. Fiona on the bow peered through the storm as the Delilah entered the tunnel. “Ravi! Ravi! do take care”. Ravi reached the other side of the path but the boat had disappeared. He was completely soaked. As he rushed towards a hawthorn tree forked lightning streaked across the sky followed by a peal of thunder. Crash! the tree shook and Ravi covered his facie in terror Ravi cowered by the side of the charred stump. The Delilah pulled out of the tunnel. “Are you all right?” called Josh anxiously. “Ravi!” cried Fiona. “You could have been killed”. “Heck Ravi” said Spanner looking in horror at the tree stump. “That could have been you, mate”. Joe turned the ignition key in his tractor and the engine roared. “Aah!” cried Spanner. “Help!” He threw himself to the ground straight into a muddy puddle. Josh teased “You can’t rest till the hay is back on the trailer!” Spanner groaned “Just look at me I’m picking Sharon up from Mr Cashmore’s later”.
